Introduction

The instruction in information retrieval provided at the Aalto University Arabia Campus Library aims to co-operate in the development of teaching and learning methods. The Library will in its own part contribute to insuring that graduates of the University will possess information seeking skills as required by good standards of information literacy.

This aim is prioritised for instance in The Ministry of Education’s plan for the development of education and research 2003-2008.  Information literacy may be defined in brief as an ability to recognise an information need, search and locate information, and an ability to evaluate and use the discovered information critically and ethically.

In working life as well as in academic studies good skills in information seeking and information technology increase the effectiveness and speed of working, but also improve the quality of end product. Information seeking is not only about mechanical information retrieval, but entails a process that is closely related to research and continues throughout ones academic studies. As function information seeking evolves throughout the process, and is continuously reassessed. Skills in systematic information seeking require discipline related expertise and understanding of organisation of new knowledge, as well as familiarity in different methods of information retrieval and available resources.
