Information retrieval / information literacy

Objectives: The course concentrates on electronic materials which are provided by The University of Art and Design Library. The student / researcher learns to acquire information effectively, evaluate information and its sources critically, and apply information effectively in research, as well as take into account ethical and legal aspects of using information.

Contents: The focus is on information seeking and management in the field of art and design, but the course also covers other libraries’ services and collections.

Image retrieval course

Objectives: The course offers an introduction to different kinds of image sources, and includes guidelines on source criticism and copyright issues concerning image use. The course’s objective is learning the effective use of a variety of image databases, and using images ethically and legally.

  • Introduction to a variety of image materials from slides to digital images
  • Information retrieval from image databases licensed by the University of Art and Design Library
  • Finnish open access image databases  
  • International museum image databases  
  • Image consortiums and other extensive image services  
  • Image retrieval from the Internet (using Internet search engines and their image banks for image retrieval)  
  • Evaluation of image retrieval – source criticism   
  • Using images – copyright from the user’s point of view

 

Personal Tuition in Information Searching

Prerequisite studies: Systematic Information Retrieval
Students working on diploma works receive individual instruction and help with information searching. The objective is to learn the efficient use of essential information sources related to the research subject, including the University Library’s and TaiK’s online materials, as well as other libraries’ or organisations’ (e.g. businesses) information sources.
